Highlighting Cyprus as an 'investment gateway' to the EU, both nations signed key defence pacts and discussed strengthening the IMEEC project amid ongoing global supply chain disruptions.
International Relations: India and Cyprus Forge Strategic Partnership
🤝 Key Agreements & Diplomatic Stance:
- Defence Cooperation: An MoU was signed between the Cyprus Defence and Space Industries Cluster and the Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers. Nicosia has also shown interest in buying Indian defence items.
- Strategic Messaging on Sovereignty: PM Modi stressed that ties are based on "respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity." This is widely interpreted as India's support for Cyprus against Turkey's occupation of Northern Cyprus.
- Broad Collaborations: The two sides will intensify collaboration in cybersecurity, the maritime domain, and emerging technologies. Direct flights will also be launched soon.
🌍 Geopolitical Impact: IMEEC & Global Trade
With global supply chains disrupted by the ongoing US-Israel war against Iran, Cyprus has offered to provide crucial transhipment facilities for global traffic.
Furthermore, Cyprus has emerged as a strong backer of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC). It has formed a 'Friends of IMEEC' grouping within the EU to restructure the security and trade architecture of the eastern Mediterranean region.

- अन्य प्रमुख सहयोग: दोनों देश साइबर सुरक्षा, समुद्री क्षेत्र (maritime domain) और उभरती प्रौद्योगिकियों में सहयोग बढ़ाएंगे। जल्द ही दोनों देशों के बीच सीधी उड़ानें (Direct flights) भी शुरू होंगी।

ईरान के खिलाफ चल रहे अमेरिका-इज़राइल युद्ध के कारण वैश्विक आपूर्ति श्रृंखला (Supply Chains) बाधित हुई है। इस बीच साइप्रस ने वैश्विक व्यापार के लिए महत्वपूर्ण ट्रांसशिपमेंट सुविधाएं (transhipment facilities) प्रदान करने की पेशकश की है।
इसके अलावा, साइप्रस भारत-मध्य पूर्व-यूरोप आर्थिक गलियारे (IMEEC) का एक मजबूत समर्थक बनकर उभरा है। इसने EU के भीतर 'फ्रेंड्स ऑफ IMEEC' (Friends of IMEEC) समूह बनाया है, जो पूर्वी भूमध्य सागर में सुरक्षा और व्यापार ढांचे को नया रूप देगा।
