(Context):

Economy & Environment: Critical Minerals Recycling Crucial for Clean Energy

Coal and Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy inaugurated a National Seminar on Critical Minerals Recycling, launching a Concept Paper to boost India's circular economy, clean energy transition, and defence preparedness.

Economy & Environment: Critical Minerals Recycling Crucial for Clean Energy
📌 Context of the Event:
Union Minister of Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy inaugurated the National Seminar on India’s Critical Minerals Recycling Ecosystem and Circular Economy in New Delhi. Organized in collaboration with the Materials Recycling Association of India (MRAI), the event highlighted the strategic necessity of mineral recycling for India's digital and green future.
♻️ Key Highlights of the Seminar:
  • Strategic Importance: The Minister emphasized that recovering critical minerals from End-of-Life (EOL) products is vital for India’s clean energy transition, defence preparedness, digital economy, and advanced manufacturing capabilities.
  • Launch of Concept Paper: A Concept Paper on Critical Mineral Recycling Ecosystem was launched during the event, outlining a robust strategic framework to strengthen domestic recycling infrastructure.
  • Focus on Jan Bhagidari: Urging citizens to adopt responsible e-waste management, the Minister highlighted Jan Bhagidari (public participation), encouraging people to view e-waste as a valuable resource rather than mere garbage.
  • Government Initiatives: To promote sustainable resource use, the Ministry of Mines is aggressively pushing e-waste management campaigns through Special Campaign 6.0 and the ongoing Swachhata Hi Seva initiative.
🌍 Building a Self-Reliant Circular Economy

As global supply chains for critical minerals (like Lithium, Cobalt, and Rare Earth Elements) remain highly concentrated and geopolitically volatile, domestic recycling is not just an environmental imperative but a national security priority. Developing a circular economy reduces import dependency, mitigates supply shocks, and accelerates India’s trajectory toward self-reliance (Aatmanirbharta) in high-tech manufacturing.
