02 Oct 2026
On October 2, the nation celebrated the 157th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and the 122nd birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, honoring their enduring legacies at Rajghat and Vijay Ghat.
On October 2, India paid solemn tribute to the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, on his 157th birth anniversary, and former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on his 122nd birth anniversary. President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President C P Radhakrishnan, and PM Narendra Modi led the nation in offering floral tributes at Rajghat and Vijay Ghat in the national capital.
- Gandhi Jayanti (157th Anniversary): A Sarva Dharma Prarthana Sabha (inter-faith prayer meeting) was held at Bapu’s Samadhi, Rajghat. PM Modi highlighted that Gandhi’s life remains a timeless beacon of truth, non-violence, compassion, and service, guiding the nation toward a Viksit Bharat.
- Lal Bahadur Shastri’s Legacy (122nd Anniversary): Born in 1904 in Mughalsarai (now Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Nagar), Shastri was remembered for his pivotal role in India's freedom struggle—joining the Non-Cooperation Movement as a teenager in 1921—and his impeccable integrity as Prime Minister.
- Dignitary Participation: Top leadership, including Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Union Minister Manohar Lal, and Delhi CM Rekha Gupta, participated in the homage ceremonies, showcasing a unified national reverence.
- Civic Arrangements: To facilitate the large-scale ceremonies, the Delhi Traffic Police implemented special traffic routing and advisories around the Rajghat, Ring Road, and Vijay Ghat corridors, encouraging the use of public transport.
The dual legacies of Mahatma Gandhi (ethics, non-violence, decentralized governance) and Lal Bahadur Shastri (administrative integrity, self-reliance via "Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan") remain the foundational pillars of India's democratic ethos. Their principles continue to serve as the ultimate ethical compass for civil servants and policymakers in contemporary public administration.
