Economy & IR: India and Canada Aim for $70 Billion Bilateral Trade in 5 Years
02 Oct 2026
Canadian Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu announced a target to boost India-Canada bilateral trade to nearly $70 billion within five years, emphasizing cooperation in critical minerals, LNG, and the upcoming CEPA negotiations.
Speaking on the sidelines of the G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting in Milwaukee, Canadian International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu stated that Canada intends to actively support India’s economic growth through deeper strategic cooperation in energy, critical minerals, and aerospace.
- Ambitious Trade Target: Driven by India’s growing energy requirements and the mutual need to diversify global supply chains, both nations aim to more than double their bilateral trade from the current ~$30 billion to nearly $70 billion within five years.
- CEPA Negotiations Advancing: The fifth round of negotiations for the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) is set to commence in Ottawa. After completing four rounds, both sides are aggressively working to conclude the trade agreement by the end of 2026.
- Critical Minerals & Energy Security: Canada highlighted its tremendous potential as a major supplier of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and critical minerals, which are highly essential for India's rapidly growing Electric Vehicle (EV) and battery manufacturing sectors.
- Mutual Investments: The partnership seeks to transcend traditional trade. Canada is welcoming Indian investments in its vast mining and energy projects, while Canadian enterprises continue to deepen their involvement in India's massive infrastructure development.
Securing reliable supply chains for critical minerals is a geopolitical imperative for India's transition to green energy and e-mobility. Deepening economic ties with a resource-rich, developed democracy like Canada not only helps India decouple its critical mineral dependencies from China but also establishes a resilient North American economic corridor via the upcoming CEPA.
