(Silicon to Systems: Building the Ecosystem)
Economy & Tech: PM Modi Inaugurates 5th SEMICON India 2026
18 Sep 2026
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated SEMICON India 2026 in New Delhi, announcing an expanded $13.5 billion outlay for ISM 2.0 and positioning India as a trusted global destination for semiconductor manufacturing.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 5th edition of SEMICON India 2026 at Yashobhoomi, New Delhi. Held under the theme "Silicon to Systems: Building the Ecosystem", the event showcases India’s readiness to meet new global manufacturing challenges and the explosive demand for holistic AI systems.
- ISM 2.0 & Mega Investments: The outlay for the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) has been expanded from $8 billion to $13.5 billion in its second phase, with 12 chip-making projects already approved.
- Semicon 2.0 Framework: IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw outlined the next phase based on six major pillars (design, machines & materials, memory, silicon, compound, and logic fabrication), targeting support for at least 200 startups.
- Economic Resilience & Global Trust: Defying challenging global environments, India recorded a strong 7.8% growth rate and secured a sovereign rating upgrade from Japan. PM Modi also cited the recent unanimous BRICS New Delhi Declaration as a testament to the world's trust in India.
- Massive Global Participation: The flagship event brings together over 600 exhibitors and 300 companies from 50+ countries. It features 12 State Government pavilions, a Startup Pavilion, and 6 country pavilions representing Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Netherlands, Singapore, and Sweden.
By aggressively expanding its semiconductor outlay and focusing on end-to-end capabilities—from R&D to chip design and fabrication—India is rapidly positioning itself as a reliable and secure alternative to traditional tech hubs. Urging Indian youth abroad to return and spearhead advanced R&D further signals a strategic shift towards long-term technological sovereignty.
