Diplomacy & IR: India Reaffirms Commitment to a Nuclear Weapons-Free World
30 Sep 2026
At the UN, India reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to universal nuclear disarmament, the combat against racism under the Durban Declaration, and the repatriation of cultural heritage to origin countries.
Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs, Sibi George, delivered India’s national statement at a high-level UN meeting in New York commemorating the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, articulating India's comprehensive stance on global disarmament and historical justice.
- Nuclear Disarmament: India reiterated its steadfast commitment to achieving a nuclear weapons-free world. The focus remains on the complete elimination of nuclear weapons through a process that is universal, non-discriminatory, and strictly verifiable.
- Combating Racism (Durban Declaration): At a separate UNGA event marking the 25th anniversary of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action, India reaffirmed its unwavering dedication to combating racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, and related intolerance through concrete, nationally-led efforts.
- Repatriation of Cultural Heritage: Highlighting a major priority for the Global South, India called for much stronger international cooperation to facilitate the immediate return of historical cultural properties and stolen heritage to their countries of origin.
India’s statements beautifully align its identity as a responsible nuclear state with its leadership of the Global South. By simultaneously advocating for non-discriminatory nuclear disarmament, pushing back against systemic racism, and leading the charge for cultural repatriation, New Delhi is actively shaping a more equitable and historically just multi-polar world order.
