Economy & IR: India Calls for WTO-Compliant Measures Against Trade Distortions

At the G20 Trade Ministers' Meeting in the US, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal advocated for WTO-compliant anti-dumping measures to counter predatory pricing and defended the policy space of developing nations.
Addressing the concluding day of the G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting in Milwaukee, US, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal articulated India's strong stance against global trade distortions. He emphasized the need for a transparent, multilateral approach to counter dumping and predatory pricing driven by hidden state subsidies.
- Tackling Predatory Pricing: Mr. Goyal stated that concerns regarding structural excess capacity, dumping, and predatory pricing must be addressed strictly through WTO-consistent measures, including evidence-based anti-dumping and countervailing duties subject to judicial review.
- Protecting Developing Nations: He warned that while supply chain diversification is a legitimate objective, it must not become a pretext for bypassing WTO rules or unfairly shifting the burden of economic adjustment onto developing countries, which critically need policy space to industrialize.
- India's Economic Reality: Asserting India's position as the fastest-growing large economy driven by a massive 1.4 billion domestic market, he clarified that India does not suffer from structural excess capacity in the sectors identified by the G20 Presidency.
- WTO Principles & Fair Labour: India reaffirmed its absolute commitment to a multilateral trading system anchored by the Most-Favoured-Nation (MFN) treatment and an unconditional commitment to eliminating forced labor within global supply chains.
India’s diplomatic positioning serves a dual purpose. First, it aligns with global concerns over systemic overcapacity (implicitly targeting China's manufacturing dumping). Second, by strictly advocating for WTO-compliant responses, New Delhi is actively preventing advanced economies from utilizing "supply chain diversification" as a veiled protectionist tool that could stymie the industrialization and economic growth of the Global South.
