Science & Tech: India Aims to Lead the World in 6G Technology

At the IFQM Symposium 2026, Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia highlighted India's transition from a telecom importer to an exporter, outlining ambitions to lead global 6G development and boosting domestic mobile production to ₹6.27 lakh crore.
Addressing the Indian Foundation for Quality Management (IFQM) Symposium 2026 in New Delhi, Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia stated a bold vision for the nation's technological future: "India followed the world on 4G, marched with it on 5G, and will lead the world on 6G."
- Shift in Trade Dynamics: India has successfully transitioned from being a net importer of telecom equipment to a rising global exporter, reflecting deep structural shifts in domestic manufacturing capabilities.
- Semiconductor Push: Boosting the hardware ecosystem, 8 to 9 semiconductor fabs are currently being set up across the country, including a strategic facility located in the North-Eastern states.
- Explosive Mobile Production: The value of domestic mobile production has surged exponentially from ₹2 lakh crore in 2020 to an impressive ₹6.27 lakh crore today. The Minister noted that 100% of all mobile phones used in India are now manufactured domestically.
- Massive Market Scale: Solidifying its digital footprint, India is now the second-largest mobile telecom market in the world, boasting a staggering 1.35 billion mobile connections.
India's aggressive push toward 6G leadership and the establishment of semiconductor fabs mark a crucial pivot toward deep-tech self-reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat). By pairing the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes with rapid domestic adoption (1.35 billion users), India is securing its digital sovereignty, reducing forex outflows, and establishing itself as a formidable node in the global high-tech supply chain.
