International Relations: Yemen Launches 'Operation Dawn of Yemen' as Mecca Alliance Activates
06 Oct 2026
Backed by Saudi airpower, the Yemeni government launched 'Operation Dawn of Yemen' to reclaim Houthi-held territories. Simultaneously, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey activated the Mecca Defence Alliance for rapid military deployment.
Yemen’s internationally recognized government, led by Presidential Leadership Council head Rashad Al Alimi, has launched a massive military offensive dubbed “Operation Dawn of Yemen” against the Houthi movement. The offensive aims to retake the capital, Sanaa, and secure critical maritime territory, occurring simultaneously with a major geopolitical shift involving Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey.
- Operation Dawn of Yemen: Government armed forces executed over 1,122 precision operations across Saada, Al Jawf, Taiz, and the western coast, taking control of strategic positions in the Dhubab district and around the vital Bab al-Mandab Strait.
- Massive Saudi Air Support: The Saudi-led coalition is providing continuous and heavy air support. Coalition spokesman Maj. Gen. Turki Al Maliki confirmed that 100 fighter jets participated in the operations, successfully destroying over 324 high-value Houthi targets.
- Activation of the Mecca Defence Alliance: Following Houthi threats and attacks on Saudi infrastructure, including a power station in Medina, an emergency meeting of the Makkah Alliance for Defence was convened in Riyadh.
- Rapid Military Deployment: Member states Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey agreed to move toward the rapid deployment of agreed military forces to the Kingdom under the pact's collective defense commitments, which is modeled heavily on NATO's Article 5.
This escalation underscores two critical geopolitical shifts. First, government control over the Bab el-Mandeb Strait is essential for securing one of the world's most critical maritime energy choke points. Second, the operationalization of the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement signals the emergence of a powerful new trilateral security umbrella in the Islamic world, reshaping Middle Eastern defense architecture independently of traditional Western security guarantees.
