Governance & Social Justice: PM Modi Champions Development of Adolescent Girls & Women's Empowerment
10 Oct 2026
At the National Departmental Summit on Women and Child Development, PM Modi emphasized adolescent health, community-driven Anganwadis, and the integration of 'Vocal for Local' and ODOP initiatives to drive women's economic empowerment.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired the valedictory session of the two-day National Departmental Summit on Women and Child Development in New Delhi. The summit brought together Ministers and senior officials from States and UTs to deliberate on early childhood care, child protection, women's safety, and strengthening service delivery through institutional convergence.
- Adolescent Health & 'Jan Bhagidari': Highlighting the critical need for adolescent girls' health and nutrition, the PM called for transforming Anganwadi Centres into hubs of community participation (Jan Bhagidari), encouraging local families to contribute nutritious food and educational toys.
- Women’s Safety Modules: Emphasizing preventive measures, Mr. Modi advised the formulation of age-appropriate educational modules for children that instill values regarding women's safety, dignity, and empowerment from an early age.
- Economic Empowerment via ODOP: To bolster economic independence, the PM urged linking women’s collectives and community institutions with national initiatives like 'Vocal for Local' and 'One District One Product' (ODOP), further suggesting that universities undertake social impact studies of these integrations.
- Centre-State Synergy & Swachhata: He advocated for decentralized brainstorming via Chintan Shivirs at the district and municipal levels. Additionally, he mandated that WCD Departments take active ownership of the Swachhata Abhiyan, intertwining sanitation intimately with health and nutritional outcomes.
This holistic approach underscores the convergence of social infrastructure (health, nutrition) with economic capability (ODOP, self-help groups). For UPSC aspirants, linking Anganwadi reforms with Jan Bhagidari represents a shift from top-down welfare to decentralized, community-owned social justice. Ensuring the nutritional security of adolescent girls is foundational to breaking the intergenerational cycle of malnutrition and fully realizing India's demographic dividend.
